The Five

Encounters

The Five Encounters are a series of layered meetings in which art, conversation and experience come together. Around The Five, a multidisciplinary performance by Merijn Bisschops, we explore five urgent themes that divide and connect our time. Each meeting opens from a different perspective. Sometimes philosophical, sometimes activist, sometimes playful or vulnerable. The topics? Sexual freedom, cancel culture, the (fe)male gaze, box thinking, and the paradox of freedom.

What can you do?

Whether you come to think, do, wander or sway, we invite you to participate in your own way.

- Take part in a playful workshop and learn by doing.

- Listen to columns and panel discussions with inspiring guests.

- Wander through a program of short films and performances

- Let yourself be carried away by the visual trip The Five, a response to the libertine novel The Five by A.H.J. Dautzenberg

Every meeting is different. Every meeting is multi-voiced. And every encounter invites you to step out of your bubble for a while, without you being alone.

A shared experiment

The Five Encounters is an initiative of the Institute of Associations (IoA), curated by composer and filmmaker Merijn Bisschops. They are a reaction to a zeitgeist, to a need for nuance. But above all, they are an invitation.

To you. You who dare to doubt. You who are not afraid of differences. You who are curious about other ways of looking, thinking or feeling. We are not here to convince each other, but to experience together.

Welcome to the middle

We live in a time of colliding bubbles. Opposites that repel each other or withdraw into their own right. It feels unsafe to stand between them. Yet that is exactly what we choose: the middle.

Not out of convenience, but out of conviction. The middle is not a gray area, it is a viewpoint. A place where differences become visible and where contradictions can coexist. The Five Encounters is one of these places.

Five encounters. Five themes that matter.

Each meeting is a mini-universe with its own atmosphere, location and program: from dance film to panel discussion, from workshop to art intervention. The Five Encounters and individual program components can be visited separately, and together form a continuous exploration of freedom, identity and expression.

Porn is within reach with one click and extreme scenes of violence stream effortlessly into our living rooms. Meanwhile, nipples are censored on social media, taboo-breaking art is removed from platforms and unwanted ideas are are shattered by framing. At the same time, we are free to set limits on the many stimuli that flood us. Not every confrontation leads to deepening. In a time of cancel culture and online threats, we ask the question: can we say and show everything or are there limits to our artistic freedom?

Ben je alt-right of woke? Klimaatklever of stikstofjunky? Zwart of wit? Heb je liever champagnekunst of commerciële eenheidsworst? Onze bubbels zijn veilig, maar ook verstikkend. In zelfbevestigende kringen vinden we identiteit en applaus, terwijl algoritmes polarisatie verder opblazen. Doen we nog moeite om het onbekende te begrijpen of zijn we verliefd op ons eigen gelijk?

Tradwives verheerlijken de perfecte huisvrouw. In de manosphere eisen mannen hun dominantie op. Incels en TERFs, RadFems en Red Pill-volgers: het wij-zij denken uit zich in afkortingen. Seksistische memes leveren brandstof. Tegelijkertijd komen mensen uit het hele genderspectrum op voor gelijkwaardigheid en zichtbaarheid. Kunnen we samen het patriarchale script herschrijven, en elkaar écht leren zien voor wie we zijn?

Glimmende sixpacks in onze feeds. Ultrakorte rokjes op straat. Lichamen worden gepolijst en verkocht als ideaalbeeld. We etaleren ons lijf, maar zodra het gaat om écht bloot, aanraking of intimiteit, schieten we in een kramp. Hoe bewegen we tussen seksuele driften en aangeleerde preutsheid, tussen de pijn van grensoverschrijdend gedrag en een samenleving die menselijk contact in een keurslijf dwingt?
